Double-Sided Popout Cards ⭐ Card Making Countdown 2026

Make a beautiful sunflower popout card and learn how to design your own double-sided popout cards in Cricut Design Space.

Welcome to Day 1 of the 2026 Card Making Countdown! In this tutorial, see how to make this lovely predesigned sunflower card.

The card is 5×7 inches in size and has a pretty “build-down” layered design on the front.

When the card is opened up, it reveals a popout sunflower scene.

This is an easy popup card to make, but it looks very impressive – especially as the inside is decorated from both sides.

After making the sunflower card, I’ll show you how to design your own cards for any occasion using the included “blank” template.

I make a snowman card in that part of the tutorial, but you can use the same steps to design any theme of card that you choose.

Foundation learning

If you're new to making papercrafts with your cutting machine, check out these links to get you started.

They include videos on topics such as: which file to use with your type of cutting machine, how to load the files into your cutting machine's software, how to cut cardstock with your type of cutting machine, how to recolor and modify/customize the cut files and tips for displaying your projects.

The following tutorials are Cricut-specific, but many of the ideas will work similarly with a Silhouette or ScanNCut machine and any cut files that are shared in them are compatible with all types of cutting machine.

PART 1: Sunflower Card Tutorial

First, we will start with how to make the predesigned sunflower card.

Want to design your own? Keep scrolling for the tutorial!

Step 1) Download the cutting file & upload to Design Space

Get the files using the box below.

Purchase the File(s)

This cut file is available as part of the Instant Access Bundle.

Find out more

Or, purchase this design individually here

Before you upload the SVGs to Design Space, you need to unzip the download folder that they come in.

After unzipping, upload the SVG file(s) into your cutting machine software.

Not sure how to use cut files with your type of machine? The following links lead to videos on how to open cut files in:

The download folder also contains printable PDF versions of the templates for hand cutting.

If you are using Cricut Design Space, start a new project and then click the “Upload” button on the left of the screen.

You can then either click “Browse” to find the file on your computer, or drag-and-drop it.

Select the file in the “01 Cricut Version” subfolder called svg-01-sunflower-dspopout-craftwithsarah.svg

Press “Upload” on the next screen.

After uploading, the design should be automatically inserted onto your Canvas.

To hide the left sidebar (to give you more space for designing!), click the arrow that’s about half way down the page.

If the design doesn’t get inserted onto your Canvas, it will show under “Uploads” in your “Recently Uploaded Images”. Click on it and then press “Add to Canvas” to put it onto your Project.

Need help uploading SVGs? Get step-by-step instructions here in our detailed help guides for Cricut, Silhouette and ScanNCut.

Step 2) Check the size and add the score lines

The card should load in at 16×16 inches tall. If not, adjust it to match those dimensions.

TIP: Make sure the padlock icon above the width/height boxes is CLOSED before you resize. If it appears “open”, click it with your mouse to close it.

Click the design and press the “Ungroup” button at the top of the layers panel.

Click the lime green size rectangle and then delete it.

Look down the layers panel until you see a Group. Click the chevron arrow to open up the layers.

Click the layer within that group that looks like a single line.

Change the line to “Score” in the operations menu along the top of the screen.

After changing to “Score”, select the group that contains your new score line and click “Attach” to tell the Cricut to do the scoring in that exact position on the layer underneath.

Repeat this for all other groups that contain score lines.

Step 3) Cut out all the pieces

When you’re happy with how the project is looking in Design Space, click “Make” and follow the instructions on-screen to cut out all the pieces.

To change the paper size, go into the dropdowns over on the left side of the screen and choose the paper size that you want to use. You need to change it for every single colour.

To save space on your cardstock, you can move things around by clicking and dragging. Make sure when you’re moving things about that nothing overlaps because otherwise, it won’t cut out properly.

TIP: New to using cardstock with your cutting machine? Check out these machine help guides for Cricut, Silhouette and ScanNCut that go through every step of the process, including tips for getting the best quality cuts from your machine.

Step 4) Glue the popout sections

My favourite glues to use on papercraft projects are Bearly Art Glue and Collall All Purpose Glue.

These are great because they don’t “warp” or bend the cardstock like some glues do. You can use as much of it as you want and the card stays perfect – and it dries perfectly clear too!

Bearly Art Glue comes with a tiny nozzle to make it easy to apply glue to small areas of card. The Collall glue doesn’t come with this, so it’s easiest to decant it into needle tip applicator bottles so that you have more control.

Fold along the score lines of the two popout sections.

I found it easiest to hold a ruler along the score line to have a solid edge to fold against.

Go down the score lines with a brayer tool or something similar to get a crisp fold line.

Line the front and back popout pieces against each other so that the sunflowers line up perfectly with each other.

This is so you know which side to glue on – you don’t want to accidentally stick two identical sides as then they will not line up in the card.

Each of the popout sides are mirror images of each other.

Take the first popout side and place it in front of you with the side you will be decorating facing upwards.

Glue all the pieces of the sunflowers in place, following the assembly guide that’s included in your download folder.

Then, repeat for the other side (you may wish to check the direction of the second side again before you start sticking!).

Here’s what it looks like with the pieces on:

Step 5) Assemble the card front

Glue the layers of the card front together, following the assembly guide included in the download folder.

Step 6) Put the card together

Fold the base card (blue) in half.

Glue one of the sides inside the base card.

Do NOT add glue above the score line!

Line the bottom of the popout section along the bottom of the card front.

Add glue to the whole of the reverse side of the other popout piece.

Glue inside the card and to the back of the first popout side.

IMPORTANT – this is a tight fit. Make sure the outer edge of the popup piece stays in line with the edges of the base card, otherwise you will be able to see the blue colour when the card is closed.

Glue the message panel onto the green side of the inside of the card.

Glue the card front to the outside front of the card.

IMPORTANT – due to the thickness of the popout sections, you might find it difficult to stick the very left edge of the card front to the base card. It is ok if that edge doesn’t quite stick to the blue.

Your sunflower popout card is all finished!

PART 2: Design your own double-sided popout cards

Here is how to design your own popup cards using the blank template that’s included in the download folder.

Step 1) Load and cut the project

The steps for uploading the SVG and getting it ready to cut are the same as written above for the blank template.

This time, the file to upload is the one called svg-blank-dspopout-craftwithsarah.svg

Upload the SVG, check the size matches the dimensions in the lime green size guide rectangle, Ungroup the layers and then delete the size guide rectangle.

Step 2) Build the first popup side

This piece on the template is where you will be building the popup insides:

The pink rectangle is a guide line. Do not place anything touching or above that line, otherwise it will not fit inside the card when it’s folded.

Also do not go any further downwards than the horizontal line on the grey piece as that shows where the card will be folded.

Insert your chosen images/SVGs and line them up on the popup shape.

You can change the shape of the popup base piece to add interest. For example, I placed a shape to look like a snowdrift.

Line it up with the left of the popup shape and make sure it isn’t wider than 7 inches.

Ungroup the popup shape from the horizontal line.

Select the grey popup piece and your extra base piece shapes and press Combine > Weld to join them into one single layer.

When you’re finished with the design, duplicate the bottom layers of your pictures in place by selecting the bottom layers and pressing Alt/Option on your keyboard then clicking the layer on the main project canvas (not in the layers panel).

That makes copies in exactly the same place.

Here are the two bottom layers of my snowmen duplicated in place:

Weld these to the base piece – make sure you don’t weld the horizontal line or pink guide rectangle.

Delete the pink guide rectangle.

Change the horizontal line to a “Score” line and “Attach” it to your base piece.

Move it down underneath the other picture layers.

Step 3) Design the card front and message panel

Combine images/SVGs together to create a front for your card.

Here is a look at my snowman “in progress”:

And after finishing:

You may wish to decorate the message panel too.

Step 4) Duplicate and flip the popup piece

Drag a box around all the pieces of your popup piece – both the base and any pictures on top – and Group them.

Duplicate it, then press Flip > Flip Horizontal to make the copied version a mirror image of the first.

This is so that they will stick “back to back” inside the card.

Step 5) Final touches

You may wish to check the colours in your design to make sure it isn’t going to try and cut very similar shades of the same colour.

To do this, click the “Material Colors” heading at the top of the layers panel.

This changes the layers panel to order by colour.

If you have similar colours, for example the two black colours in the above image, click-and-drag one onto the other to combine them.

Save your project, then get it cut out and assemble the card.

Use the sunflower tutorial at the top of this page to see how the popup sections go together.

I love how my custom snowman card turned out!

And there you have it – your premade sunflower card AND bespoke popup card in your chosen theme are both complete.

These cards have so much possibility, for all different themes and occasions.

The popup effect is simple to put together, but is sure to impress anyone who opens up the card.

Put it in a custom envelope or 3D presentation box to make it even more special.

Happy crafting,
