Paper Embroidery Border Pattern

Updated on August 31st, 2019

Create a handmade card with a difference with this simple paper embroidery border pattern.

Paper embroidery is a beautiful card making technique that’s easy to do but produces gorgeous results.

You don’t need expensive equipment for it either. All you really need is some thread, a needle, a pricking tool (you could use your needle!) and some card.

This free paper embroidery border pattern is designed for beginners to card stitching.

What I really like about this pattern is that it can be used for so many different occasions, and the colour combinations are endless.

I chose pink and green for my card as it looks almost like flower petals with leaves, but you could do any kind of colours.

You don’t have to stick to two colours either; I think this would look fabulous with the ‘inner’ row of petals in the middle of the circle to be a third colour.

You could try red and green for Christmas card making projects, or perhaps orange and black for Halloween cards.

The pattern comes in two different sizes so you can choose which one to sew based on the size of the card you are making.

How to make a paper embroidery card

  1. Print out the free paper embroidery pattern onto regular printed paper. The pattern can be downloaded using the buttons at the bottom of this post.
  2. Rough cut around the edge of the pattern and attach it to the front of a piece of hammered white card using masking tape.
  3. Place the card on top of a foam surface so that you will be able to prick through it. I use a piece of packing foam that I ‘rescued’ from an old parcel delivery.
  4. Use a pricking tool or similar and prick through all the dots on the pattern.

  5. Remove the masking tape and pattern and place to one side.
  6. Choose your embroidery thread colours and thread an embroidery needle with your first colour.
  7. Use a small piece of sticky tape to attach the end of the thread to the back of your card.
  8. Thread your needle through the holes in the card and stitch it, following the lines on the pattern template.

  9. When you get to the end of a thread, use another piece of sticky tape to attach it to the back of the card.
  10. When you have stitched the entire paper embroidery pattern you can cut the white hammered card to size and then stick it to a card blank.
  11. In the photo, I used a 6×6 inch pink card front from the Dovecraft Painted Blooms collection.

    • Each pack holds 8 card and envelopes
    • In a subtle pink and green colour palette to make each craft project stand out from the crowd.
  12. Decorate the card. I used a selection of silver-peel off stickers, cut a circle from a coordinating backing paper from the Dovecraft Floral Muse collection and then finished it off with a gorgeous folded heart rosette.

I hope that you enjoy stitching this floral card stitching border as much as I did.
