Haunted House Handmade Card

Published on October 2nd, 2019

Make a Halloween card that really stands out with this Haunted House handmade card zigag stacker.

I’m trying out different card making techniques this Halloween, and to start with here is a concept I designed way back in 2011 for Craftsuprint which is called a ‘Zigzag Stacker’.

Want the free printable? Scroll to the bottom of this post to download it!

Zigzag stackers are made in a similar way to traditional pyramage cards.

You cut out different shapes and then layer them on top of each other using foam pads to make a 3D effect.

How to make a zigzag stacker

  1. Print the free zigzag stacker printable onto photo paper or card. I like to use glossy photo paper as it gives a nice shine to the card.
  2. Cut out all of the shapes on the card.
  3. Take the large rectangle part of the design and place it in front of you. It’s marked with a blue arrow on the printable.
  4. Use 3D foam pads to stick the two largest zigzag pieces on the left and right of the rectangle design. These are marked with black arrows on the printable. The foam pads will give your card a 3D effect.
  5. Use more 3D foam pads to stick the smaller zigzag pieces on top of the larger zigzag pieces. These are marked with red arrows on the printable.
  6. Your zigzag stacker is now complete, so it’s time to assemble your handmade card.

How to make a Haunted House handmade card

Once your zigzag stacker has been finished, it’s time to add it to your card!

To make one exactly like mine, here’s what you need to do…

Use a 5×7 inch white card blank as the base for your card.

Cut a piece of black checked paper to size.

Mine is from a 6×6 inch paper collection called “Wild Woods” by Love To Craft.

Amazingly, I bought this paper pack in Poundland!

They have really improved their card making selection recently. They even have unicorn craft supplies!

I recommend popping in next time you go past one, as it’s a wonderfully affordable way to add to your craft stash!

Use your paper trimmer to cut the background paper down to size.

If you don’t have a paper trimmer then draw a pencil line to ensure it’s straight, then cut with scissors.

Stick your background paper to the card blank using double-sided tape.

I have a tape-runner for tasks like this, and I love it!

  • Pack contains 1 tape pen
  • Extra strong permanent tape is a massive 22m
  • Perfect for card making

Seriously, these tape runners are AMAZING – they make it so quick to stick things together when crafting.

Next, add some silver peel-off stickers to the top of the card for some gothic-style borders, and one long piece of peel-off sticker just above the backing paper.

Stick the Haunted House zigzag stacker to a piece of bright red card and trim it so that only a small border of red remains.

Attach the topper to your card using tacky glue or more double-sided tape.

I tend to find that tacky glue holds the topper on a little bit better than tape, and it means you can reposition it if you stick it in the wrong place.

  • The fine precision nibs enable more accuracy and control
  • Reduce wastage with this product as it can simply be poured back into the bottle
  • Unlike most glues this one dries clear and reduces the possibility of spotting mistakes/overflow

It’s nearly finished now – all it needs is the ‘Happy Halloween’ sentiment topper to be mounted on more red card, then stuck to your card with 3D foam pads for that final bit of dimension.

And there you have it – your finished Haunted House handmade card, just in time for Halloween!
